Hi Robyn
The Mike Walker duo were a perfect act for Mum's 70th. Their repertoire was exactly what we asked for and the guests really enjoyed it. The combination of keyboard and bass is great for a lunch - people could easily chat and hear each other, but the music filled the space and made the event go very well. Live music is always a bonus, and I would recommend this combination to any jazz fans who need background music to add to their function.

Apologies for this late reply but just to let you know that the evening event went really well.
It was a surprise occasion having Mike and Alberto join us to celebrate our son’s 21st. Mike was able to use our piano and once Alberto arrived (after he got slightly lost), the music was great, especially since the birthday boy was also familiar with Jazz standards. They were a delightful duo who became an instant part of our family. Campbell joined the boys in the second hour to sing several jazz numbers, bit of scatting, Frank Sinatra, Blues, Buble….it was wonderful. So yes, highly recommended.

Review --- Mike Walker Quintet
What can you say ?? Reviewing the July night at the club ,you just run out of superlatives about the Mike Walker Quintet and the fabulous night they put on for us . To the many local musos,who showed up , it was a superb example of what a top professional 5 piece group can do . To our crowd -- they just loved the tunes , the fabulous rythms and the stage presence , of Adrian Keeling and Jane Horder the 2 singers .
With a band like this it all starts with the rythm ,and here we saw the best . Leader and piano player [ and a true icon of NZ jazz ] Mike Walker , bassist Pete Mcgregor , and master drummer Bruce King put down so many complex rythms with such panache and drive . They made it all look so easy . Drummer Bruce King fascinated everyone by showing just what a top flight drummer is like . . , Bruce has been the "first call ' percussionist for many years around the NZ jazz scene but ,. Unfortunately we haven't seen enough of him over recent years. Fine tenor sax man Roger Manins filled in the gaps beautifully.
It wasn't only the quality of the music ,but the selection of tunes was just right for a cold winters night . This again shows professionalism , and long experience , to keep our members listening and dancing right to the end .
And why dont we give our own club a rev ? The atmosphere ,sound , and a good happy feeling in the club was all due to our committee putting a lot of work into making this an exceptional night . If a bunch of hardened pro musos like the Mike Walker Quintet say they thoughrily enjoyed the gig -it must have been good !! It says a lot for the mana of our club that such an excellent band travels all the way {and back] in one day over mid winter to play for us
