Type: Folk Music Group
The Maritime Crew:
New Zealand's only music group specialising in the performance of Sea songs and Shanties was formed in 1994 with the primary purpose of performing for visitors to the National Maritime Museum at Auckland's Hobson Wharf. There they give free concerts on the first Sunday of every month.
A mature group of 7 men rehearse regularly and it shows with hearty enthusiasm as they sing and chant their way through a range of songs collected from around the world but also including some originals. On some tunes they accompany themselves with banjo bones, guitar, mandolin, mouth organ and whistle. The remainder of the songs are sung unaccompanied. Their repertoire includes International Shanties and Sea songs and Irish tunes.
These guys are entertainers as well, with lots of humour. They can perform at conferences, weddings, parties, street festivals and markets.
The Maritime Crew has recorded 2 CD's. One a studio recording and the other recorded live at Auckland Folk Festival 2000. Our demonstration tracks are from the latter.
In 2001 The Maritime Crew toured Poland and performed in front crowds of up to 5000 people plus on Polish TV.
