From an article in Avenues, “Christchurch’s Symphony – Family Affair
We all know it’s true when they say "music runs in the family", but few people realise that there is a very fine example of this in our own Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The orchestras Iryna Ionenko (Principal Second Violin), Milana Kornienko (Associate Principal Second Violin) and Galyna Zelinska (Principal Cello) are not only consummate musicians, but they are also sisters. And if you ever wondered why Iryna and Galyna bear such a striking resemblance, it’s because they are identical twins.
The sisters are Ukrainian, and like many other prodigious Eastern European musical talents they started playing music from a very young age, encouraged by their musical father and devoted mother. Their father was a professional viola player at the Opera in Kiev, while their mother sacrificed her own career to develop the musical talents and career of her daughters.
The girls all followed the same prestigious educational path. At the age of seven, the twins were sent to the elite and highly acclaimed Special School for Gifted Children in Kiev, Ukraine, for exceptionally talented students. The school was free, but to gain entry, the twins had to pass the demanding three-day compulsory exam, which tested them in all disciplines including poetry, dancing, singing and playing music. Galyna & Iryna were accepted to play their respective instruments - cello and violin.
Milana was to follow in their footsteps, but with cello and violin playing sisters already in the family, the sister’s mother was keen for the younger Milana to play the piano - however Milana decided to play her first love, violin.
Each of the sisters spent 11 years of boarding and rigorous training at the special school until the age of 18, and then moved on to the Conservatorium of Music in Kiev for a further five years of study before starting their professional music careers. The older twin sisters first played in the State Orchestra of Ukraine and then the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine for many years. Milana was a member of the Orchestra at the Opera House before she joined her sisters in the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in 1992 where they played together for four years before their move to Christchurch Symphony.
During their time in the National Symphony Orchestra they toured Australia, Europe and Hong Kong.
Since then, the three sisters have been stalwarts of the Christchurch Symphony, and have contributed enormously to its improved musical strengths and virtuosity.

Thanks for your email. The evening went very well and we have had a number of people comment on the success of the event overall.
String Trio Allegro arrived on time, and fitted in with the evening well. To be honest because I was so busy throughout the evening I did not really have the opportunity to listen properly to their music myself, and when I was at my seat my attention was elsewhere, but I had no negative comments so I think everything was fine.
