The Dances
Atsiagbekor
Atsiagbekor, otherwise called AGBEKOR
for easier pronunciation is a style of drumming and dance from
the EWE tribe in the South Eastern part of GHANA. Atsia means
style or display in the Ewe language.
This dance is an ancient war dance believed to have been copied
by our ancestors from the monkeys. Each dance movement is synchronised
with the lead drum. The dance is fast paced creating stylish and
energetic movements depicting the combat of the battlefield. Both
men and women participate in the dance today. Agbekor is performed
for entertainment at social getherings and at cultural display.
Kplago
Kplago,
A fairly recent highlife form from the Ga tribe in GHANA. Dancing
and drumming is high spirited and the songs are fresh and lively.
The drums are congo like and played with the hands.
Gahu
A colourful circle
dance originally from Nigeria. Dancers wear expensive robes and
headgear, and sing and dance of being well-off and proud of it.
Kinka
Kinka, as performed
by the South Eastern Ewe of Ghana originated from EFLAH in Benin.
Only fishermen at the beach initially performed it after a hard
days work. Now, kinka is performed at most social gatherings as
a recreational music.

Zoh Ensemble make their music through drums, shakers,gongs,
chant songs etc. Zoh Zoh means making a journey, every journey
begins with a step. The type of dance drumming is from Ghana
on the West Coast of Africa.Astiagbekor, Kpalogo, Gahu, Kinka
are the major historical styles of dance drumming Zoh Zoh
Ensemble presents to their audience. |
