VoxNova
VoxNova is an Auckland-based latin
fusion band that was formed in 1997 by Scottish-born percussionist
Alan MacDonald. The band consists of five members who are devoted
to providing a unique nuevo flamenco sound, expertly performed on
traditional acoustic instruments in a contemporary style - best
described as "Gipsy Kings meets Buena Vista Social Club."
The line-up consists of two acoustic latin
guitars, mandolin, violin, double bass, latin / Arabic percussion
and vocals in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
The repertoire includes classic rhythmic
treats composed or made famous by: The Gipsy Kings, Joao Gilberto,
Antonio Carlos Jobim, John McLauchlin, Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola,
Sergio Mendes, Carlos Santana and the Buena Vista Social Club. Compositions
have been sourced from Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Brazil, Bolivia,
Peru, Cuba, Argentina, plus a pinch of Morocco. Also included in
the repertoire are beautiful works by lesser-known composers that
are currently enjoying a revival in interest, in addition to creations
penned by the group’s own Chico.
VoxNova has a musical pedigree that is unsurpassed
within its genre within New Zealand
