Jazz
Simply Jazz is
a Wellington-based duo comprising Andrea Robinson (piano) and
Noel Evans (double bass).
They provide tasteful cocktail
jazz as background music for weddings, corporate functions, show
openings and private functions. Their repertoire utilises material
derived mainly from the ‘Great American Songbook’,
plus Latin music from composers like Antonio Carlos Jobim and
Louis Bonfa.
Pianist Andrea Robinson
played in a variety of covers bands in Tauranga, before touring
Australia and settling in Wellington in the early eighties. Styles
included country rock, blues, soul and pop. In 1996 she moved
briefly to Wisconsin with her family and played in a country band.
After completing a Music Degree in composition at Victoria University
she decided to move over to her real passion which is jazz.
Bassist Noel Evans
is a veteran of the Wellington jazz scene, having played throughout
the sixties with Terry Crayford’s group that at times included
saxophonist Bruce Johnstone, and the late Bruno Lawrence. In the
mid-seventies he played in the Buddy Jones’ led New Zealand
Jazz Orchestra. More recently he has played with guitarist Leigh
Jackson and pianist Kevin Clark. Career highlights include touring
NZ with legendary jazz vocalist Carmen McRae, and the Kings Singers
from Cambridge University.

Simply Jazz have
played several gigs at fundraising functions for the Wellington
Hospitals and Health Foundation, including the recently-refurbished
Government House in Wellington. In addition they have played at
weddings and worked in with the bridal couple to play requested
music for their special day. They have supported several events
at the Pataka Museum of Arts and Cultures in Porirua and played
at a number of private parties in homes.
Drums can be added,
as can vocals, for larger gigs.
