ROUNDhouse
ROUNDhouse began with friends
getting together to play the jazz we never had much chance to
play in other groups. The experiment was successful enough that
we decided to turn it into a working band.
The band playlist includes classics by
Miles Davis (All Blues, Freddie Freeloader), Herbie Hancock (Watermelon
Man), standards such as Summertime and My Funny Valentine, a number
of Latin-flavoured tunes (like Horace Silver’s Song for
My Father and Chitlins Con Carne by Kenny Burrell), plus a smattering
of original material, and classic pop/rock tunes given a jazz
twist (for example Money by Pink Floyd).
Who plays in ROUNDhouse?
On piano/keyboard/lead vocals - Tony Ramsay
who has loved jazz since he first heard “Kind of Blue”
by Miles Davis. Tony has played jazz, classical, rock and pop
music both in New Zealand and Australia. He worked in a number
of professional bands in both Sydney and Melbourne before returning
to New Zealand in the mid 90’s. During the week Tony teaches
music at an Auckland primary school. Tony writes the band’s
original tunes.
On drums - Richard Linklater who has been
playing professionally for over 30 years in a wide range of styles
from strict-tempo ballroom to heavy rock. For the last several
years Richard has been involved in “world fusion dance music”
with groups such as Papa-D and Left Hand Down. Besides drum kit
he also plays Cook Island log drums, West African drums, and Latin/Brazilian
percussion. He brings a sense of punch and fire to the jazz mix
influenced by these other styles. Richard teaches drums and operates
sound systems.
On bass/backing vocals - Don Weller who keeps
things sure and steady whether he’s playing a walking line
on a jazz standard or punching out a Latin groove. He first worked
professionally in the early 70’s in Roger Skinner and the
Motivation. Since then he has played in most of the pubs and clubs
in greater Auckland with various groups. Recently he has been playing
in the 18 piece big band Powerplay. Don is an engineer by day.
On
saxophone – Drew Hutchinson, who started his ‘horn’
career on clarinet when he was a teenager. Drew has spent time
playing guitar in the ‘Queen City Big Band’. He specialises
in the saxophone now and can play soothing lines over a jazz ballad
or belt out a strong Rhythm and Blues number with the band. He
divides his time between playing, teaching and building musical
instruments.
We believe that music should be fun and entertaining, not merely
proficient (after all, why do you think we call it ‘playing’
music?). We guarantee not to play polite cocktail jazz, whilst
reading diligently from a Real Book and looking bored out of our
trees. Passion and intensity, without blowing your head off!!
