Motor City Family Funk is a nine-piece Motown tribute band based in Auckland. Boasting a three-piece vocal frontline led by Esther Stephens of Go Girls fame, Motor City Family Funk pride themselves on their uncompromising policy of sharp suits and sharp tunes. This focus on presentation and performance has shaped them into a topshelf band. Motor City Family Funk draws material predominantly from the golden days of the Motown record label, when it produced a cavalcade of number one hits. Motor City Family Funk set out in 2006 to do justice to these fantastic arrangements as only a band of its size could. The songs of the Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the occasional non-Motown artist such as Bill Withers are given reverent renditions, guaranteed to be loved by the kids and surly teenagers right through to the grandparents. The band has enjoyed a long-standing and ongoing relationship with Rakinos Café & Lounge Bar, performing there regularly since its early days and now enjoying the status of being one of its most successful regular events. Motor City Family Funk regularly performs to riotous receptions at summertime festivals such as the Devonport Food & Wine Festival, Auckland Seafood Festival and the Summer Series, with successful billings alongside bands such as The Hot Grits, Batucada Sound Machine and Barnaby Weir. |
