Karen Hunter
Vocalist and guitarist Karen Hunter is a famliar name in the New Zealand original music scene. Reknown as a 'funky acoustic singer/songwriter' and as a regular player at Auckland venues Java Jive and Temple bar in the 1990's, Karen has toured several critically acclaimed albums nationally and has also performed at international festivals such as Melbourne's 'Frankston Guitar Festival', Noumea's 'Femme Funk' and the 'Michigan Women's Music Festival' (U.S.A) as well as our own 'Christchurch Jazz Festival'. Karen's love of jazz began after 'going back to school' in 2001 and learning to apply her talents to the traditional jazz repertoire.

Karen often performs as a solo singer/guitarist and is especially happy to interact with other musicians in duo, trio or quartet settings. Karen performs a variety of jazz standards and familiar pop covers interspersed with her own funky original tunes where appropriate. The result is a delightful blend of bluesy jazz/folk, with Karen mixing such standards as 'God Bless the Child' and 'Body and Soul' with her original material and clearly making them all her own.

Karen has supported international touring artists Ani Difranco, Suzanne Vega, Toni Childs and Roger McGuinn ( The Byrds). Other professional highlights include accompanying New Zealand icons Shona Laing and Dave McCartney (Hello Sailor) and American jazz singer Rhiannon on guitar, percussion and backing vocals.

Karen also teaches on Auckland's prestigious M.A.I.N.Z contemporary music course.
