planning a wedding with Damon Winter
Planning the perfect music for Your Wedding
by Damon Winter

Live music adds beauty, structure and a palpable sense of occasion to weddings large and small.

CDs just do not have the same effect! Here I offer some thoughts on planning your wedding music based
on 15 years of performing at weddings in a variety of settings and styles. The main thing is the music you
choose will reflect the type of ceremony you desire: traditional, modern or a mixture of both.

The Prelude
The music that is heard as your guests arrive at the venue and find seats is known as the prelude. The first
guests almost always arrive about 30 minutes before the ceremony is scheduled to begin, and their
entrance is my cue to begin playing. Prelude music announces the ceremony will begin shortly and also
creates a unifying atmosphere for guests as they mingle. Remember for many of the family and friends in
attendance your wedding is something of a reunion. The music I play is therefore warm, sparkling and at
the correct volume to allow easy conversation. For formal church weddings specific hymns and classical
pieces are often chosen. In other locations a mixture of popular light classical and well loved romantic pop
is usually preferred.

The Processional
This is the long awaited, dramatic and uniquely special moment when you, the beautiful bride, walk down
the aisle towards the altar and your groom. The moment itself may be as short as 30 seconds or up to 6
minutes depending on how far you have to walk. When there are a large number of bridesmaids a
separate piece is often chosen for their entrance. The music to accompany your journey is often a contrast
to what has gone before: a sweeping classical piece, a modern pop song I have arranged at your request or
even flamenco. There are no rules and you have complete freedom to choose the perfect song for your big
entrance.

Interludes
In the rich variety of wedding traditions various ring, candle, ribbon, tea and other ceremonies are woven
into proceedings. Music is often suitable to accompany them as well as readings of poetry or bible
passages.

Signing of the Register
In terms of wedding theatre the signing of the register is like an intermission right towards the end. You
and your bridal party will need about 8 minutes to sign the important documents and perhaps a few
minutes more as photographs are taken. For your guests there is a gap in the action which my music fills,
unifying the event once more and sending it towards its grand conclusion. There is often time for 2 or 3
pieces and they may vary in style or maintain a consistent mood.

The Recessional
The grand finale is when you are declared wife and husband. In church you would then walk arm in arm
towards the exit. On the beach you are more likely to stay where you are as family and friends approach
you with congratulations. The music at this moment is a celebratory, joyous announcement of the
marriage. There will be cheering, applause and lots of smiles.

The Postlude
Happy, upbeat music is the natural background as you mingle with family and friends directly after the
conclusion of the ceremony. This time is called the postlude and typically lasts for 20 minutes or so before
you and the bridal party depart for special photos or the entire party moves on to the next stage of the
day’s celebrations.

The Cocktail Hour
While you are away having photos taken your guests often stay at the ceremony location or move to a
venue close by for pre-reception dinner drinks and conversation. The full range of my repertoire is now
available to provide entertainment for all ages; from show tunes and classic pop to flamenco and hum-
along jazz.

The Reception Dinner
Solo guitar is a traditional and well loved accompaniment to festive meals, and live music allows for special
touches. I may, for example, play a reprise of the processional song as you and your husband make your
entrance to the restaurant or function-room or in other ways tailor the music especially for you.

The First Dance
After the speeches you and your husband may well have the first dance. I love providing the music for this
wonderfully romantic moment and would suggest a rehearsal prior to the night.

Location
Outdoor weddings are becoming more popular every year. My self-powered amplification provides a
beautifully clear and consistent sound on the beach or in the garden. On a practical note an alternative wet
weather location is a very good idea. Also, easy access and good nearby parking will be much appreciated
by your guests.

That’s all there is to it

Hi Event Management May 2011

Hello Pete, and Happy New Year to you !

Trust you had a good Christmas, did you catch any fish?

Our function on the 1st of January was a wonderful success, and Damon Winter contributed hugely. Everyone was most impressed with him, he was totally charming, his music was perfect for the occasion, and I have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone.

Damon is a great asset to your business, and if the other acts are only half as good, then you have a winning team.

Sincerely,

Margie Legh Jan 2010

Hi Pete

Damon was fantastic and highly professional. He handled the lack of a strict program with aplomb! And his playing was lovely and just perfect for our garden setting.

Cheers

Louise Cullen Dec 2010
